We Northerners are proud of where we live, and we like to shout the region’s praises.
Sometimes, we make our cars do some boasting, too. For a little extra money, numerous territorial motorists have outfitted their vehicles with licence plates that scream Northern pride.
In the Northwest Territories, an old Toyota Land Cruiser plies the streets of Yellowknife with the plate 4BEAR4 – stamped onto the famed white polar bear. There are also plates reading 50BLOW, MUKTUK, HUSKY, RAVEN, NUGGET and GNFSHN.
When Michael Pealow lived in Fort Liard, he had a plate that said GRRR. “Our house was on the main street, right across from the visitor-information centre,” says Pealow. “People would always come over, laughing and take pictures of our vehicle. It became a tourist destination.”
