North Slave Staycation

North Slave Staycation

After hearing “rave reviews” about Blachford Lake Lodge, Alexandrea Malakoe and her family figured it was time to look into taking a staycation.

“We were really looking for a getaway. We are used to taking trips out of the territory to explore new parts the country. Knowing that the Northwest Territories has some really cool things to offer, we figured ‘Hey! Let’s do a staycation and go somewhere fun.’  January is always a tough month with the dark days, so we booked a trip to Blachford for three days,” explains Alexandrea. The decision led to a “fun and incredible” family experience.

“I was born and raised in the Northwest Territories and it was fun to finally take time after all these years of being here to go out and explore parts of the territories that I had never been to,” Alexandrea says.

“[Blachford] had so many different activities ... Every day we did one of their different hikes, [by either] snowshoeing or walking.” The fun-loving family also went fat biking and kicksledding, to which Alexandrea adds “were new activities for us, which was really cool.”

Apart from enjoying the wintery outdoors, Alexandrea had particularly great things to say about the food. “I have travelled all over the world and the food at Blachford is definitely right up there.” She insists “it’s some of the best food I’ve had.”

Aside from the excellent services provided by Blachford, the ability to have a getaway so close to home really opened Alexandrea’s eyes to the spectacular beauty and out-of-the-way-but-not-too-far-away adventures that the Northwest Territories can offer to lighten up the dark days of winter.
