The Ingraham Trail, also known as Highway 4, extends from Yellowknife to Tibbitt Lake in the Northwest Territories, covering approximately 70 km. Built in the mid-1960s as part of Canada’s National Highway System, it was intended to encircle Great Slave Lake and serves both industrial and recreational purposes. The trail is used annually for the Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road, which provides access to three diamond mines and is featured in the reality television series Ice Road Truckers. Additionally, the Ingraham Trail offers access to seasonal and year-round cabins. The trail is the only connection to Dettah from Yellowknife after ice break-up on Great Slave Lake, and it links Nunavut to Canada’s road network via the Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road. Named after Vic Ingraham, a pioneer Yellowknife businessman, the Ingraham Trail has become a prime location for viewing the aurora borealis during peak season, from August to April.
