The Beer Barge
The Beer Barge
Is a reenactment of the annual celebration, in Yellowknife’s early days, of the arrival of the first supply barge each spring after a long winter and, most importantly, after several long weeks without beer.
This event is nowadays celebrated by the Yellowknife Historical Society and is its biggest fundraiser of the year. All proceeds will go to support operating and maintenance costs of the newly opened Yellowknife Historical Museum, located near the Giant Mine Boat Launch, occupying the building with the red roof on the right of the highway that was once home to the Giant Mine Rec Hall.
There will be entertainment by local bands, dancing, a chance to visit the museum, food for purchase from the new Miners’ Mess Café, provided by Hidden Gem Catering and, of course, a plentiful supply of beer (for purchase)!
There will be prizes for the best period costumes, and a draw, the winner of which will be whoever makes the closest guess as to the exact time the barge will dock at the boat launch, carrying, in addition to the beer, the Yellowknife Pipe Band, resplendent in their NWT tartan and revellers dressed in the garb of gold miners and prospectors of the 1940s.
This year, the date is June 22nd, from 4:30 – 10:30pm
Admission: $30
Tickets are available now from the Yellowknife Historical Museum (open from 10:30am – 5 pm Monday to Saturday) and Quality Furniture.
