Sambaa K’e is located near the Alberta border, east of Fort Liard, on the sandy shores of the lake from which it takes its name. Both the community and the water body were formerly known as Trout Lake before being returned to their traditional names.
This placid Dene settlement of about 100 residents dates back to the late 1960s, when a school and other community services were established. But local Dene fishers, hunters and trappers have been using this idyllic site for centuries.
Today, Sambaa K’e is famous for its fishing. In addition to Lake Trout, anglers can also expect to find amazing Walleye, Pike and Arctic Grayling. Locals also maintain traditional food sources including moose, caribou, porcupine, duck and beaver.
Sambaa K’e can be reached by air from Fort Simpson or Hay River or via winter road in the early months of the year.
