Kingalik Jamboree
During the Kingalik Jamboree weekend community members and visitors gather together to compete in our outdoor traditional games of seal skinning, duck plucking, fish filleting, tea boiling and Bannock making. Inside the Gymnasium during the evenings are drum dance performances, live music played by local musicians with jigging contests and square dances are held – as well as games for all ages. Residents are treated to an array of native and contemporary foods which are prepared and shared by tireless volunteers at the Jamboree grounds. Highlighting the weekend is the outing to Mashooyak, which is approximately 5 km out of town – a traditional spring hunting camp – where contests of harvesting the 1st Kingalik (male king eider duck), 1st Mitek (female king eider duck), with cod and sculpin fishing. Ending the events, Jamboree Royalty: King, Queen, Prince and Princess are awarded using a point system for the events they partake in.
