Salvelinus alpinus

Average weight: 2.3 to 3.2 kg (5 to 7 lbs)

The flash of reddish orange in the fast flowing river signals a feisty challenge. Arctic Char, a member of the salmon family, are migrating in this Arctic river. Dozens, then hundreds, flash by - determined to reach their Northwest Territories spawning grounds.

Char weighing up to 6.8 kg (15 lbs) are caught in some NWT rivers. Arctic Char usually sport a dark green back and silvery sides, with pale white/pink spots, but at spawning time, both male and female sea run char are brightly coloured, the male a vivid orange-red. Flesh colour varies, but the distinctive char flavour rivals salmon. Tempt an Arctic char with a brightly coloured fly, or by dead-drifting a small bright or natural coloured nymph.
