Come away with us on an adventure through Yellowknife that goes beyond your typical city tour.

Led by guides who are deeply rooted and connected to the city, the land and culture and the people who have and do reside here. You’ll learn the stories passed down through multiple generations, the lore and the unbelievable tales of how Yellowknife began and those that have paved the way, all while Yellowknife is still within its infancy.

Gain insights into the multiple layers of Yellowknife – those of the old and new, from legends to the vibrant spirit of today!

Please block off 2.5 hours for this adventure- your tour includes the following:

  • Pick up/drop off from 1 of 4 hotels- (Explorer Hotel, Chateau Nova Hotel, Quality Inn Hotel and Nova Inn)
  • Photo opportunities
  • Stops within the city to explore and connect with the land

Tours run Monday to Friday 9:30am -12pm or 1pm to 3:30pm

Located along the south shores of the Great Slave Lake, this is the perfect destination for a serene and picturesque getaway.

Castaways Cottages & Campground is pleased to offer our Aurora Viewing Cottage packages for guests from near and far! This package includes a 4 night stay in a two bedroom fully equipped cottage, airport pickup and drop off, shuttle transportation to restaurants and shopping, full access to the wilderness lodge & sliding hill, snow tubes, kick sleds, stops at the visitor center & gift shop, and more!

We are conveniently located 10 minutes from the historic town of Hay River in the Northwest Territories. Our area is renowned for the breathtaking northern lights, and Castaways is the perfect location to witness their captivating displays almost every night from the comfort of your own cottage!

Book the 4 night – 3-bedroom – Aurora Package for 2 and add a max of 4 more guests. Each cottage has 3 queen beds, a full bathroom, fully equipped kitchen, washer and dryer, and the cottage’s outdoor deck is the perfect place to watch for northern lights. Enjoy hunting the aurora from the cottage windows and sharing the view with just your select party.

A fire pit is located outside for those with a sweet tooth for marshmallows. Games and cards are also available in the lodge.

Ever Good Medicine is owned and operated by Carl Jr. Kodakin-Yakeleya, a Shúhtagot’ine man (Mountain People) originally from Délı̨nę and Tulita First Nations in the Sahtú region of NWT. Now based in Yellowknife, he offers a variety of programs and services such as Medicine Walks, Retreats, Apprenticeships and Group Workshops about Traditional Dene Medicines in the NWT that teach the protocols and values to follow when gathering them.

Aurora Viewing Under the Dene Skies

Experience our authentic Indigenous Aurora Tour.

Spend an evening among the Dene people, with northern lights story-telling, Dene history and legends, traditional drumming, and samples of traditional foods such as local Great Slave Lake fish and freshly made bannock. Visit our camp with a heated cabin and teepees with comfortable seating for everyone. Our camp is located on the shore of Great Slave Lake, with exceptional opportunities to see and photograph the vibrant Aurora Borealis.

Evening departures: 9pm-2am (4-5 hours)

  • Hotel pick up at 9PM and drop off at 2AM
  • Drive to the Community of Dettah and visit to our B.Dene Adventures camp
  • Our December to April tours include a snowmobile ride from the Community of Dettah to our B. Dene Camp

Okpik Arctic Village Day Stay – Winter

We will pick you up in Inuvik and take you for a drive along the Inuvik-Aklavik ice road to the Okpik Arctic Village about 16 km north of town where you will spend the day with us to reconnect to nature. Together with your local guide you will learn how to build an igloo, check the trap line and enjoy a delicious tea while listening to stories in our tipi. You will also get to know our dogs and learn more about dog sledding and go for a 2 hour dog sled ride. While preparing a cultural meal for you, our Elders will explain to you how to use the ingredients from the land. You will learn about Arctic agriculture, food processing and more. At the end of the day we bring you back to town.

Experience the Northern Lights on the Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk Highway

Join us for a breathtaking tour along the stunning Mackenzie River, where we embark on an adventure to chase the mesmerizing northern lights. As we traverse the icy landscape, you’ll have the opportunity to spot a variety of wildlife!

Tour Details:

  • Time: 9 PM to Midnight (or longer)
  • Duration: 4-5 hours

Add-On Experience: Extend your adventure with a full-day journey along the Dempster Highway to the Arctic Circle. As we drive this iconic route, we’ll continue our search for the northern lights and keep an eye out for wildlife along the way. Enjoy the thrill of crossing two rivers and navigating the winter landscape via ice road.

Experience Lutsel K’e

Experience Łutsël K’é

This 2-hour community tour provides the opportunity to learn more about the history and culture of the Łutsël K’é Dene and to get a sense of daily life in a remote Indigenous community. Łutsël K’é is the only community out on the East Arm of Great Slave Lake, and the people who live here enjoy a way of life balanced between traditional ways and modern conveniences.

Learn about the landmark development of the Thaidene Nene Protected Area, the international recognition the area has earned, and its importance to the culture and history of the community.
