South Slave Staycation
Sheilany Bouchard, who has lived in Hay River for five years now, spent her vacation exploring the South Slave’s rich offerings, taking to her bike in summer and her skis in winter. Bouchard purchased gear at Yellowknife’s Overlander Sports store and drew on her “creativity” as she engaged in outdoor activities, either alone or in the company of others.
From Kakisa to Fort Simpson, Bouchard, who works as a teacher, biked and kayaked, taking her holidays up a notch. “Adventure is right around the corner!” she exclaimed. Bouchard, who chose wilderness camping for its added “flexibility,” says spending her holidays locally also gave her the opportunity to experience multiple camp sites. On her stops, the sporty camper stayed at the edge of the Little Buffalo River and McNallie Creek. “You realize just how good you have it here in the Territories. You’re surrounded by nature. It’s the most relaxing place on Earth. You rarely come across another soul,” said Bouchard, who plans to tackle the North Slave this summer.
