Bring Your Bird Book

With four North American flyways providing access to our land, there are some wonderful bird watching opportunities in the Northwest Territories. The skies, rivers and lakes in late spring and summer echo with the chatter of shorebirds, songbirds, ducks and geese. Gulls and terns soar over our lakes. About one-fifth of the North American continental population of ducks, geese and swans nest here.

Summer or winter you can spot the wily raven – a symbol of the north country. These huge, playful all-black birds, are common in all our communities. Ptarmigan change colour with the seasons, and in winter are usually only visible when making a sudden low – flying escape. Other year round, residents include chickadees, jays, and snowy owls.
