NWT Dogsledding with Huskies You’ll Love

Dogsledding is one of the most iconic winter activities in the Northwest Territories. It carries a history stretching back thousands of years. In winter and spring, you can still see dog teams racing across glittering snow, towing harvesters along ancient traplines, competing in exciting dog-derby races, or carrying visitors on a once-in-a-lifetime journey beneath the Northern Lights.

A Northern Tradition

For generations, Indigenous peoples of the North relied on sled dogs to haul supplies, support hunting expeditions, and connect distant communities. Sled dogs can come in all breeds, shapes and sizes, but are primarily huskies. These hardy huskies also played an important role in early Arctic expeditions. Known for their endurance and intelligence, dogs could even guide lost travellers back to camp in whiteout blizzards. At night, they curled into dug-out snow shelters and were ready to run again the next day. Their strength, resilience, and ability to thrive in extreme conditions remain legendary.

Today, while snowmobiles have largely replaced dog teams for everyday travel, dogsledding continues to thrive as a cultural tradition and thrilling adventure. For outdoor enthusiasts, thrill seekers, and bucket list travellers, it remains one of the most unforgettable ways to experience the North.

What to Expect on the Trail

Across the NWT, tour operators and mushers offer dog sled tours ranging from short rides to full-day adventures. Depending on the experience you choose, you may ride in a larger sled pulled by a team, share a sled as a pair, or try kicksledding. This involves a smaller sled with handlebars, where you stand on one runner and kick off the ground with your other foot to glide forward with the help of eager huskies.

Out on the trail, you’ll quickly understand why this activity is so beloved. The only sounds are the soft scrape of the sled runners on snow and the rhythmic panting of the dogs. In the frosty air, their breath hangs in small white puffs, tails curled high in excitement. These dogs love to run, and it shows.

The Language of Mushing

Mushers, the drivers of the sleds, use short, clear commands to guide their teams. The word “mush” itself comes from the French marcher, meaning “to walk.” While sled dogs may not bark like typical pets, they respond eagerly to a set of time-honoured calls:

Hike! – Get moving.

Gee! – Turn right.

Haw! – Turn left.

Easy! – Slow down.

Whoa! – Stop.

On By! – Pass another team or distraction.

Teams are carefully arranged, with each position playing a vital role. Lead dogs run in front and follow commands. Swing dogs run behind them and help guide the sled around curves. Team dogs provide the power and maintain pace, while wheel dogs, usually the strongest, run closest to the sled and help pull it smoothly.

Meet the Dogs

Every sled dog has a unique personality, and meeting them is one of the highlights of any adventure.

Riley may be the smallest dog in the kennel, but she is mighty. With boundless energy and a big voice, she’s a natural lead dog, always eager to set the pace and be the centre of attention.

Pippa is full of character. She can be temperamental with other dogs but is affectionate with people, making her a reliable swing dog who helps guide the team around turns.

Sledge and Hammer, two devoted brothers, are the powerhouse of the team. Sledge’s enthusiasm makes him a spirited worker, while Hammer’s steady nature keeps everyone moving in rhythm. Together, they are dependable team dogs who provide the strength and stamina to drive the sled forward.

Optimus Prime, an Alaskan Husky, is a tireless worker and a favourite among kids, especially when they learn he is named after a Transformer. His size and steadiness make him a perfect wheel dog, harnessed closest to the sled, and his reward of choice is frozen fish.

Gear and Preparation

Modern sled dogs are outfitted with nylon and fleece harnesses, while in the past, hide and fur were used. Dogs often wear protective booties, small slippers that prevent ice from forming between their toes, secured with straps around their ankles.

For travellers, preparation is simple but essential. Dress in warm layers, wear insulated boots, and bring mittens or gloves, along with a scarf or neck gaiter for added comfort. If you are heading out on a guided dogsledding experience, many tour operators also provide winter gear for rent, along with hearty snacks and hot drinks to enjoy after your adventure. Whether you are gliding across a frozen lake, racing through the forest, or pausing under a sky alive with the Aurora, dogsledding in the Northwest Territories is more than just a winter thrill. It is a connection to history, culture, and the pure joy of the huskies who love to run.
