Catch the Mighty Inconnu in the NWT

Mysterious, powerful, and one of the largest fish in the North—meet the Inconnu, a legendary catch in the Northwest Territories.

A French name that translates to “unknown”, this fish has fascinated anglers for centuries. French-speaking voyageurs traveling with Alexander Mackenzie in the 18th century first called it “poisson inconnu” or “unknown fish”.  Today, Inconnu—also called Coney or Sheefish—are found in the pristine, remote waters of the North. These top predators thrive in the undisturbed lakes and rivers of the North, offering an unforgettable fishing experience for those who seek them.

Giants of the Whitefish Family

Growing up to 31 kg (68 lbs) and over a metre (39 inches) long, Inconnu are true giants of the Whitefish family. Their sleek, silver bodies and distinct narrow snouts make them instantly recognizable. In contrast to other Whitefish species, their lower jaw extends beyond the upper jaw. With powerful tails built for speed and large mouths made for hunting, they are relentless predators—like the northern version of the Tarpon. Their diet includes Whitefish, Pike, Stickleback, Minnows, Arctic Lamprey, and even smaller Inconnu.

The history of Inconnu in the NWT runs deep. For the Dene people, the Yellowknife River is called “Wiilideh” because Inconnu (Wiili) were once so numerous that people said you could walk across the river on their backs during certain times of the year. Though numbers have declined in some areas, these fish still dominate many of the territory’s most remote waters.

Not much is known about the full life history of Inconnu. They mature at around seven or eight years old and can live for more than 35 years. Some remain in freshwater their entire lives, while others migrate between rivers and coastal waters to spawn in late summer or early autumn. Young Inconnu face challenges, including predation from Northern Pike, Burbot, and even larger Inconnu.

Where to Find Inconnu

Anglers in the NWT can find Inconnu in the Mackenzie Delta, Great Slave Lake’s North Arm, as well as the Peel, Arctic Red, Mackenzie, and Liard Rivers. They tend to lurk near the bottom but rise to the surface to feed, making drift fishing and spin casting productive techniques. Gold and silver spoons or rubber-tailed jigs mimic their prey and are sure to entice a strike. Speaking with local tackle shops or fishing operators can help anglers choose the best lures for the conditions.

Hooking an Inconnu is only the beginning of the adventure—these fish are famous for their strength and acrobatics. They leap, thrash, and fight hard, making every catch an exhilarating challenge. But be prepared: they tend to hook deeply, so careful handling is needed for successful catch-and-release.

How Does Inconnu Taste?

Beyond the thrill of the catch, many anglers wonder—how does Inconnu taste? The answer varies, but its firm, white meat is often compared to Striped Bass, European Seabass, and Japanese Seabass. For centuries, Indigenous communities like the Gwich’in, Dene, and Inuvialuit have valued Inconnu not just as a food source for people but also for sled dogs. The fish is traditionally dried, smoked, or incorporated into dishes such as “akutaq”—a Northern delicacy made by blending flaked fish with fat and berries, often likened to ice cream. But one thing everyone can agree on is the undeniable pleasure of a shore lunch after a day on the water. There’s nothing quite like the experience of frying up fresh fillets over an open fire, creating a truly authentic Northern meal that captures the essence of the wild. If you don’t manage to catch an Inconnu yourself, you can still savor its unique flavor at various restaurants throughout the Northwest Territories.

If you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime fishing experience, chasing the mighty Inconnu in the NWT should be at the top of your list. These powerful fish, found in some of the most pristine waters in the world, promise an unforgettable adventure for any angler ready to take on the challenge.

In late summer, if you stay on the water to cast a line after the sun sets, you might be lucky enough to witness nature’s most dazzling light show, the Aurora Borealis.

Keen to make the catch of a lifetime?
