Itinerary: One wild weekend in Yellowknife
Spend your first morning getting the scoop on the North’s wild capital at the Northern Frontier Visitor Centre, the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Museum and the territorial Legislative Assembly Building.
Then amble down to Old Town, grabbing lunch at the famous Wildcat Café …
… and summitting Bush Pilot’s Monument, with the best views in town.
Great Slave Lake looks inviting, eh? Rent a canoe or paddleboard from Narwal Northern Adventures or Old Town Paddle. Circumnavigate Latham Island and Joliffe Island, gawking at the shacks, mansions, floatplanes and houseboats.
Righteously fatigued, dine on the deck of The Woodyard, where you can lift a pint (or two) of their locally craft-brewed suds.
And for a late-night taste of frontier spirit, head to the most celebrated saloon in the North, the Gold Range. Here, the dance floor is alive with two-stepping, and the patrons range from political elites to trappers just in from the bush.
Retire to your campsite at Fred Henne Territorial Park, your Yellowknife Bay Floating B&B, or your lofty suite at the top of the Explorer Hotel.
Next morning, rent a car; pack your hiking boots, fishing rod and lunch; and explore the glorious Ingraham Trail. Be sure to wet your line in Prosperous, Prelude or Reid Lakes …
… and to picnic at famous Cameron Falls.
In the evening, before your flight home, treat yourself to dinner at Bullock’s Bistro, where you sup on catch-of-the-day whitefish and toast the Northwest Territories, vowing one day to return.
